Round 1: Match 7
The Priory 0 Fran
cis Hill 2
Defending champions Sir Francis Hill overcame a tough challenge from neighbours The Priory Academy in yet another pulsating first round tie at Sincil Bank on Friday night.
The holders struck in the opening minute when Thomas Cockett broke quickly from the kick off to release Ben Sharpe who slotted the ball home, but The Priory responded immediately with a header from Ben Bowler which almost levelled the scores. Lewis Millington also went close for The Priory before Ben Bowler forced a brilliant reaction save from Jordan Wade.
Despite the freezing cold and blustery conditions, the game was end-to-end with some excellent football from both teams. With the tie still finely balanced, Kyle Pooley saw his effort just clear the Priory crossbar before he succeeded in extending his teams' lead with a cool finish. Again The Priory responded and again Ben Bowler found goalkeeper Jordan Wade in brilliant form for Sir Francis Hill. The, in the closing moments, Jack Rowden struck a long-range free kick which appeared goal-bound but for an outstanding piece of goalkeeping from Brendan White who tipped the ball away at full stretch, and despite some late pressure from The Priory, Sir Francis Hill held on to claim their place in the quarter finals.
Well done once again to The Priory for their part in an exciting cup tie, and congratulations to Sir Francis Hill who will return in the New Year to continue the defence of their title.
