College students tackle sport and social inclusion
As part of its rapidly expanding Education programme, Lincoln City Football In The Community was invited to speak to National Diploma in Sport students at Lincoln College recently as part of their assignments on Social Inclusion and Sports Development.
The workshops were designed to provide students with an insight to some of the positive work being delivered every day by the Community Imps team - tackling social issues such as bullying, anti-social behaviour and discrimination, as well as highlighting the importance to young people of living a healthy, active lifestyle, taking part in sport, and developing respect and teamwork skills at the same time.
Plus, the workshops highlighted some of the social, physical and geographical barriers which the Football In The Community scheme faces when delivering its programmes of work across Lincolnshire. Damian Froggatt, who manages FITC's Education Programme, delivered the student lectures.
"Its important that young people learning about the delivery of sport understand not only the benefits but also the barriers which we face. As a registered charity we compete against many long-established national organisations to access funding to provide long term sustainable projects and our success is measured not just by how many people we work with but also the effect we may have on their lives," he said.
Sports Lecturer Michelle Rowitt added, "The lectures delivered by Football In The Community were excellent and met the needs of the students in terms of their current assignments. Damian was able to use real practical examples of community project work carried out by his team to demonstrate real social issues encountered in community sports development."
